Book about the poetics of Tolstoy's representation of the human quest for existential meaning; The relationship between Tolstoy's poetics and his metaphysics, his art and his ideology; Tolstoy's fascination with both the limitations and possibilities of human consciousness; Tolstoy's use of the genre of the novel and its antecedents in Russian literature; Tentative thesis: Tolstoy used the genre of the novel to create an all-encompassing vision of life, which celebrates human possibility over limitation, and which celebrates the extraordinary in the ordinary flow of everyday life; Estimated date of completion: 2006.
